I accept your apology. Tell your friend Ben to Mind his business, you’re a big girl who can fight your own fights. However your apology doesn’t negate that your Freudian slip (Blonde hair blue eyed) is symptomatic of the Race issue behind people so against Jesse as Finnick. Because whether you want to admit it or not, you wanted Finnick to be Blonde/Blue Eyed. Yes it was a mistake, but it was a mistake that was rooted in how you really feel as do lots of other people who casually read a clear description of Finnick to be Blonde/Blue Eyed, despite the ACTUAL description being otherwise. The fact is Suzanne Collins wrote about a mixed race future. Whether or not Lionsgate will actually adhere to the intent of the author is to be seen.
I put “way too much time into this”? Let’s see. I’ve put exactly 2 hours into this since May 18th. You have FORTY+ blogs yesterday alone. So if you’re not RACIST, why did you call me “Ghetto” when I have been nothing be articulate in anything that I write. How am I ghetto in anything other than I support a Black man being cast as Finnick. Really, I’m curious. Why did you so quickly want to categorize a debate as being “Ghetto”?
How do you have a HUNGER GAMES FAN BLOG and “Accidentally” say “Finnick is going to be your blonde hair blue eyed boy.” And say you knew he had Bronze hair but made a mistake. You made a mistake and spoke what your racist little heart wanted Finnick to be? A white, “Blonde Hair Blue Eyed Boy.”…
wow…um kay…my cousins are actually half black, thank you very much. You are really putting way too much of your time into this. my god. Is it really necessary to put people down? i said i was sorry, can we not leave it at that?
well, quite frankly i call everyone ghetto. It’s what I call hardcore people. I apologize if my language offended you, i meant nothing of the sort. It wasn’t souly directed at you, either. I had other people with the same anger and passion against what i said. I apologize for both offending you fandomwise, and personally.
Dear Ben,
Why did your racist friend Rachel immediately default to me being “ghetto.”
And why are you speaking to me on her behalf. She’s a big girl. She can speak for herself.
Mind your fucking business.
Hi.
My name is Ben, but I don’t think i’d really like us on a personal basis. I don’t know you, nor do you know my friend, Rachel. So I suggest you shut your fucking mouth. Leave her alone. Leave your rude comments somewhere else. People make mistakes, and to have someone go all insane as fuck over something like this ridiculous. Get out. Leave her alone. And shut the fuck up.

YOU are the one who showed your TRUE feelings about how you see Finnick being. And for the record, Finnick is a (fictional) MAN. Not a boy. And he’s not blonde OR blue eyed.
WORST HUNGER GAMES FAN EVER.
And I am HARDLY Ghetto. For the record I am not a Black person. But of course anyone who would be a fan of a Black Actor must be a Ghetto person. Stop being daft.
hold the fucking hate train guys. yes, actually, i have read the books. I read them religiously and the fact you’d assume otherwise is sickening. i had this blog before the movie even came out. pardon me for making a mistake, you dont needa go all ghetto kick ass on me. I’m aware finnick has bronze hair and sea green eyes, but thank you for pointing it out. tumblr isnt supposed to be a place to show people up, jesus. sorry.
Suzanne Collins’s book The Hunger Gamesdeals with a dystopian society, and takes place in the fictional nation of Panem. Panem — most likely derived from the Latin phrase panem et circenses, which literally translates into “bread and circuses” — exists in the same geographical space as the current boundaries of North America, but was established following the destruction of modern civilization. (You’ll also notice that many characters have Roman names.) This futuristic country is not all-white. It is diverse; there are many skin colors and hair colors, and in The Capitol, citizens dye their skin, and use surgery to alter their features.
While some fans were shocked to discover that black actors were chosen to play the characters Cinna, Rue and Thresh, they should not have been: It’s all right there in the books. Suzanne Collins very specifically described a world in which the blonde people were wealthy and the olive-skinned and brown people were poor. Race was built into the structure of the novels, and those who “skipped over” the part about Rue and Thresh having dark skin missed a huge part of the story.
In April of 2011, Suzanne Collins told Entertainment Weekly that her characters…
…Were not particularly intended to be biracial. It is a time period where hundreds of years have passed from now. There’s been a lot of ethnic mixing. But I think I describe them as having dark hair, grey eyes, and sort of olive skin .…But then there are some characters in the book who are more specifically described.
For instance: Thresh and Rue. Collins said, “They’re African-American.”
Director Gary Ross added:
Thresh and Rue will be [played by actors who are] African-American. It’s a multi-racial culture and the film will reflect that. But I think Suzanne didn’t see a particular ethnicity to Gale and Katniss when she wrote it, and that’s something we’ve talked about a lot.
It’s all right there. A multi-racial culture. But let’s look at each character’s description. If we skipped a character, it’s probably because there wasn’t enough information about his or her physical appearance.
Katniss Everdeen lives in District 12, which is coal-mining country. This area is called The Seam, and Katniss has the “look” of The Seam: Olive skin, “straight, black hair,” which she pulls back into a long braid, and grey eyes. She’s also “small in stature” and light for her age — one of the smallest tributes in her games. Some who have read the book will argue that this is an Appalachian look, and that Katniss lives in or near Appalachia, but since this is a dystopian future where races have mixed and geography is different and the gene pool has changed, it’s pretty safe to say that Katniss is not necessarily Anglo-Saxon. Despite the fact that Jennifer Lawrence was chosen to play her, it could have been someone like Q’orianka Kilcher, who is part Quechua but was raised in Hawaii; or a younger Emmanuelle Chriqui, who is Moroccan/Sephardic. The point is: It’s Sci-Fi. It’s the future, She could be of Italian, Cambodian, Greek, Chinese, Muscogee, Choctaw and Sri Lankan heritage, all combined. All we know is that she has olive skin and “straight, black hair.”
Sorry I left for so long, guys. This whole thing started blowing up and even tho there was just as much support as there was opposition, I really started taking the anti-Jesse people personally. Maybe because I didn’t expect the reaction that we were getting. I felt like there was this book that so many of us loved but half of us read one book, where Finnick could be someone who looked like Jesse and the other half read a book that said Finnick was White, Blonde and Blue Eyed. They were so convincing about it that I started to doubt myself.
Until today.
Today I found this quote from Suzanne Collins herself:
“It is a time period where hundreds of years have passed from now. There’s been a lot of ethnic mixing. But I think I describe them as having dark hair, grey eyes, and sort of olive skin.”
The author herself admits to NOT WRITING A TRILOGY THAT IS FULL WHITE PEOPLE. How is this future world, written as the future of our world now, a nation of mostly white people, where white people are both the heroes and villains and minorities are minor characters? How is that the future when in 2011, white babies were the minority (and the numbers continue to decrease today.) Face it people, the future is a future of Mixed Race people. Mixed race leading Characters. Mixed race leading men.
Yet, Lionsgate and a huge population of Hunger Games fans want to go against the future that Suzanne Collins created and Whitewash it. Shame on ALL OF YOU. Shame on ruining something that we all loved.
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD EVERYONE! READ THE DAMN BOOK!
FINNICK IS NOT BLONDE AND BLUE EYED.
Simply because I’m sick of hearing all these racist motherfuckers going “HE NEEDS TO BE WHITE AND BLONDE HAIRED AND BLUE EYED”.
FFS
Go read the book. Like actually read it.
And then after you’ve realised how wrong your physical description of Finnick is, maybe you should start to question why your view of the world is so white-washed.
oh man.
- he’s exotic looking
- he’s got the perfect eyes for him
- his body is deffo up to par.
I mean, I imagined him more latino-ish because logically (to me) D4 is in parts of what used to be mexico. But he’s fooiinne.
It would only be a little sad that he wouldn’t have his flow-y bronze…
Those of you saying no to Jesse Williams as Finnick because he doesn’t “fit the book description” (which he does, perfectly, but that’s your reasoning) or “what you imagined” -
Did you say anything when Jennifer was cast as Katniss? Did you say anything about her not looking anything like what…
Watch this.

RACIST HUNGER GAMES FANS GTFO!
i am so fucking pissed my blood is boiling.
At first I was upset about the Rue and Thresh controversey because people got mad about the fact that they were black in the movie when they were CLEARLY DECSRIBED as having DARK BROWN SKIN in the books. And even if you don’t imagine a character as black right away saying that a casting director made a “bad decision” based solely on the race of the actor is complete and utter BULLSHIT.
You do not simply choose to ignore the fact that they are actors who played their parts wonderfully just because you felt uncomfortable that every character on screen wasn’t fucking pansy ass whit like you.
I am so tired of watching my words when I talk about this. ITS FUCKING RIDICULOUS.
also because the finnick odair tag is full of basic shits
i hope you all wake up one morning and realise everyone you have ever known is played by Jesse Williams
